National Canadian Film Day (NCFD) will be celebrated online Wednesday, giving Canadians the opportunity to unite through a shared appreciation of our cinematic culture.
The seventh annual event includes the participation of Telefilm Canada, CBC, Cineplex, and Netflix, among others, with the centrepiece of this year’s programming “CanFilmDay Live” – an interactive livestream broadcast from 6 – 10 p.m. ET on YouTube and canfilmday.ca. It will feature conversations with filmmakers and other industry professionals, including Jay Baruchel, Megan Follows, Atom Egoyan, Colm Feore, Mina Shum, Philippe Falardeau, Vinay Virmani, Patricia Rozema, Emily Hampshire, Peter Keleghan, Mary Young Leckie and Don McKellar.
“While there is a huge selection of pop-up home entertainment happening, we believe that Canadians are hungry for an opportunity to be part of something larger, and especially something Canadian. It’s a chance to come together and give each other a big virtual hug,” said Jack Blum, Executive Director of REEL CANADA. “And we’ve been thrilled by the warm response our plans have received from filmmakers and community partners alike.”
CBC, CBC Gem, APTN, Super Channel, OutTV, CHCH, Starz, Showcase, Encore+, Netflix, Hollywood Suite, Crave, and the National Film Board (NFB) are among the broadcasters and platforms highlighting Canadian films Wednesday with a curated list of spotlight films featuring titles ranging from 1979 Bill Murray comedy classic Meatballs to Sophie Deraspe’s Antigone, TIFF’s 2019 Best Canadian Film selection.
