Nathalie Théberge appointed CRTC Vice-Chair

Nathalie Théberge has been appointed Vice-Chairperson of the CRTC, starting April 3.

Canadian Heritage announced Théberge’s appointment to a five-year term on Thursday. The longtime civil servant steps into the vacancy created by Alicia Barin’s resignation last month to focus on her personal life following the sudden passing of her husband last summer.

Théberge has most recently served as Vice-Chair and CEO of the Copyright Board of Canada. Prior to that, she held a number of executive roles within the Department of Canadian Heritage, including Director General, Creative Marketplace and Innovation and Manager, International Affairs.

Canadian Heritage says Théberge led cultural and copyright measures in a number of major trade negotiations, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership and agreements with South KoreaJapan and the European Union, in addition to leading the development of Canada’s Creative Export Strategy. At the international level, she also represented Canada as the national point of contact for UNESCO’s 2005 Convention on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

“In a world where technology is constantly redefining the way we communicate, create and enjoy culture, the CRTC’s role is more relevant than ever. Having Nathalie Théberge on the CRTC’s management team will strengthen the organization’s ability to navigate today’s complex digital landscape, while protecting the interests of Canadians and our creative professionals,” said Canadian Heritage Min. Pascale St-Onge, in a release. “I wish Nathalie Théberge every success in her new responsibilities. I would also like to thank former Vice-Chairperson Alicia Barin, who stepped down in January, for her service to the CRTC since 2019.”
