The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) will honour veteran journalist Lisa LaFlamme with its annual CJF Tribute.

The annual award recognizes significant contributions to journalism. LaFlamme joins past recipients including André PicardDr. Sanjay GuptaAnna Maria Tremonti, Malcolm Gladwell and David Suzuki, among others.

CJF chose to announce LaFlamme as its annual honouree on International Women’s Day.

Lisa LaFlamme is a powerful voice in journalism in Canada and beyond; a force for good who represents journalism’s power to make a difference in telling stories that matter,” said CJF chair, Kathy English, in a CJF announcement. “On this global day to celebrate women, the CJF is thrilled to announce Lisa as our 2023 Tribute honouree. In her professional excellence and integrity, Lisa has long been a role model, mentor and friend to so many women in journalism. There is no one more deserving of the CJF’s 2023 Tribute.”

LaFlamme began her broadcasting career in 1989 at CKCO Kitchener. She joined Newsnet, CTV’s 24-hour news channel in 1997, becoming the channel’s primary anchor a year later. Following a stint on Canada AM, she was named national affairs correspondent for CTV National News, where she succeeded Lloyd Robertson as chief anchor and senior editor in 2011. LaFlamme parted ways with the network last summer in a highly-publicized departure that sparked a national conversation about ageism, sexism and double standards.

Since leaving CTV, she’s covered the death and funeral of Queen Elizabeth II as a special correspondent for CityNews and travelled to KenyaTunisia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo with Journalists for Human Rights to promote the work of reporters telling stories of gender-based violence.

Wendy Freeman, the former Head of CTV News and a current CJF Board Member, called LaFlamme “a true champion for women in journalism and a passionate advocate in promoting women’s rights worldwide.”

“She has inspired and continues to inspire an entire generation of women journalists,” said Freeman.

LaFlamme will be presented with the CJF Tribute at the CJF Awards on June 13 at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto. Global News anchor Farah Nasser will host this year’s awards ceremony.
