Juanita Peters named ACTRA National Woman of the Year

Actor, director and advocate Juanita Peters has been named this year’s ACTRA National Woman of the Year.

ACTRA bestows the award each year upon an ACTRA member who uses their passion to support ACTRA members and women within the broader audiovisual industry. Peters joins past recipients including Sarah Polley, Tina Keeper, Tantoo Cardinal, Shirley Douglas and Dr. Rita Shelton Deverell.

Currently the Executive Director of the Africville Museum in Halifax, Peters started her career as a reporter and anchor with CBC News at Six in New Brunswick and AVR in the 1980s and ’90s, going on to host and write CBC’s Doc Side documentary series from 2002-06.

An ACTRA member for two decades, Peters has appeared in over 30 films and television series, including Sex & Violence, Forgive Me, Splinters, Hobo With a Shotgun, Cloudburst and the Emmy-nominated Homeless to Harvard. Her directing credits include CBC series Diggstown and Studio Black, as well as 2021 feature film 8:37 Rebirth

Peters is a founding member of Women In Film and TelevisionAtlantic (WIFT-AT) and Nova MultiFest, Atlantic Canada’s newest multicultural festival. She has served on the boards of Women In the Director’s Chair (WIDC), Playwrights Atlantic Resource, Matchstick Theatre and the Robert Pope Foundation. In recent years, she’s also worked for the Council on African Canadian Education and as Knowledge Lead for the Home for Colored Children Restorative Inquiry.

ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists) is the national union of professional performers working in English-language recorded media in Canada, representing over 28,000 members across the country.
