Jean-Marc Vallée, Winnipeg’s Eagle Vision among Rockies Gala Award honourees

Late Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallée will be among the Banff World Media Festival’s Rockies Gala Award honourees this year, as announced Thursday morning.

Vallée, whose numerous film and television directing credits include The Dallas Buyers Club, Wild, and Big Little Lies, will be posthumously awarded the Rockies’ Canadian Award of Distinction. Presented by the Canada Media Fund and MadeNous, the award is given to a Canadian whose body of work exemplifies outstanding achievement in the entertainment industry. Past honourees include Simu Liu, Eric McCormack, and Kim Cattrall.

Eagle Vision founder Lisa Meeches

Winnipeg-based independent production company Eagle Vision – led by Lisa Meeches and Kyle Irving, and behind series like Burden of Truth, Ice Road Truckers, and Oscar-winning feature film, Capote – will be presented with the Innovative Producer Award, recognizing the entrepreneurial excellence and achievement of an independent producer in TV/digital media.

Other honourees include Saturday Night Live alumnus Ana Gasteyer, who’ll receive the Sir Peter Ustinov Comedy Award; actress Vivica A. Fox (Kill Bill: Vol. 1 & 2, Empire), who’ll receive the Inclusion Award, recognizing efforts to champion and reflect diversity; and New Zealand comedian, actress and TV presenter Rose Matafeo (Starstruck, Funny Girls), who’ll receive the Creative Voice Award.

The team behind Showtime psychological drama series, Yellowjackets (Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson and Jonathan Lisco) will be presented with the Showrunner of the Year Award.

The awards will be handed out at an in-person ceremony at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel on Tuesday, June 14, hosted by Canadian R&B/Soul icon Jully Black.

Additional awards to be presented at the ceremony include the Impact Award, bestowed annually to an individual or group that has made a significant and impactful contribution to screen-based entertainment; Program of the Year, presented to a critically acclaimed, ground-breaking, and/or highly rated program from within the last calendar year; and the Grand Jury Prize, awarded to the highest scoring project in the Rockies Program Competition.
