Humber College says while fall intake for its Broadcasting – Radio program has been suspended due to declining enrolment, it is being “reviewed” with an eye to updating the curriculum.
Faculty and students were told last week that no new students would be accepted for the fall 2025 term for the Broadcasting – Radio diploma, Film and Multiplatform Storytelling post-graduate certificate, and Public Relations Advanced Diploma programs.
“Humber reviews and updates its curriculum on an ongoing basis, and intake suspensions are sometimes part of the regular renewal process,” a college spokesperson told Broadcast Dialogue. “Humber remains committed to broadcast education and equipping students with the skills and experience in digital media, online publishing and entrepreneurial thinking to be prepared for what comes next in broadcasting.”
Program Coordinator Paul Cross, speaking only as a two-decade professor in the program and not on behalf of the college, said it’s doubtful the course offering would return under the same name, essentially ending a more than 50-year legacy that counts many notable graduates as alumni.
Humber previously cancelled its post-graduate Radio and Media Production certificate program in October of 2023, with the 2024 class the last to graduate. It continues to offer Film, Acting & Media Production programs, including a Broadcast TV and Videography diploma, Film and Television Production advanced diploma, Television Writing and Producing certificate, and Journalism.
The college is just the latest in a string of post-secondary institutions to hit pause on their radio broadcast offerings, including Algonquin College, Loyalist College, and Seneca Polytehnic, citing declining enrolment and a cap on foreign students.
