Harvard Media makes ‘strategic staff reductions’ across its markets

Harvard Media has made a series of what the company is calling “strategic staff adjustments” to offset escalating operational costs.

Impacting just under 10% of the company’s total staff count – between job cuts and attrition – the staffing changes affect every market Harvard Media operates in, including Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, Yorkton, Fort McMurray and Red Deer.

“In 2024, we experienced modest revenue growth in both traditional radio and digital platforms, which was a significant achievement,” said Matt Hill, CEO of Harvard Media, in a statement provided by the company. “However, despite these gains, our expenses continue to rise faster than our revenue, creating an imbalance that requires immediate corrective measures.” 

“The rise in expenses is largely driven by the need to maintain the high standards of programming our audiences rely on,” he added.

Among those departing the company is Zenga McCurdy, who was heard on the 96.3 CRUZ FM (CFWD-FM) Saskatoon morning show, as well as in Edmonton and Yorkton.

The company said executive salary adjustments are among the measures it’s taking as it adapts to the evolving media environment.

“These decisions were not made lightly, but they are necessary for the future stability of Harvard Media,” Hill said. “By making these adjustments now, we will be better positioned to serve our communities while building a stronger, more sustainable business.”
