Green Frame coalition commits to sustainable TV and film production

Canada’s major film and television content financing organizations have come together under the banner of the “Green Frame” coalition, which aims to shrink the industry’s environmental impact.

Announced at the Sustainable Production Forum (SPF) in Toronto on Monday morning, the initiative brings together crown corporations, federally-funded organizations, and CRTC-mandated funds. Spearheaded by CBC/Radio-Canada, the group includes the Bell Fund, the Black Screen Office, Broadcasting Accessibility Fund, the Canadian Independent Screen Fund for BPOC Creators, Canada Media Fund, Independent Production Fund, Indigenous Screen Office, National Film Board of Canada, Shaw Rocket Fund and Telefilm Canada.

Green Frame aims to make it easier for the industry to adopt sustainable practices by having organizations collaborate on guidelines, best practices and training; sharing and leveraging resources to support industry research and information exchange; expanding its network of collaborators to share sustainability learnings; and engaging under-represented communities disproportionately affected by climate change. They’ll report annually on their progress.

Green Frame will also collaborate with other industry coalitions committed to advancing sustainability including Canadian Broadcasters for Sustainability, Producing for the Planet, Reel Green, Ontario Creates and On Tourne Vert.

“How we produce our series and films matters as much as what we produce. That’s why I’m delighted that 10 of Canada’s most prominent screen organizations have joined CBC/Radio-Canada in committing to work together to reduce our industry’s environmental footprint,” said CBC/Radio-Canada President & CEO Catherine Tait, in an announcement. “Together, we’re going to make a real impact in making our industry more sustainable.”

The Sustainable Production Forum continues in Vancouver on Oct. 8, with a virtual climate writing workshop to be offered on Oct. 29.
