Global BC anchor Sophie Lui recognized by Jack Webster Foundation

Global BC anchor Sophie Lui is being honoured as the 2023 recipient of the Shelley Fralic Award by the Jack Webster Foundation, celebrating a journalist concerned with making her community a better place.

The anchor of Global BC News at 5 and co-anchor of the flagship Global BC News Hour at 6, the foundation says Lui’s unwavering dedication to journalism, mentoring, community service, and advocacy epitomizes the legacy of the late Vancouver Sun columnist the award is named for, who passed away in 2021.

“She is not only a trusted journalist but also a dedicated community volunteer and recognized leader, truly committed to making our province a better place for everyone,”  the foundation said, in an announcement Thursday.

Lui is active on Global BC’s Diversity and Gender Equity Committees and has used her voice to speak out against the rise of anti-Asian hate crimes in B.C.’s Lower Mainland during the COVID-19 pandemic, among other issues. In addition to mentoring and championing newsroom colleagues, she has devoted her time to numerous charities, including BGC (Boys and Girls Clubs), BC Cancer Foundation, Chinatown Foundation, and Cause We Care Foundation.

Lui started her career at CFAX in Victoria, following her graduation from BCIT. From there, she transitioned into television at CHEK TV, before joining Global BC in 2007.

The Shelley Fralic award was introduced by the Jack Webster Foundation in 2022 with Jennifer Thuncher of the Squamish Chief its inaugural recipient. Nominations for the Shelley Fralic Award open in the spring of each year and are kept and considered for three years.
