Daytime Emmy Awards give nods to Canadian kids programming

Sinking Ship Entertainment’s Dino Dana has earned eight 2019 Daytime Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Preschool Children’s Series and nominations for actors Michela Luci and Bill Cobbs.

Daytime Emmy Award nominations have been announced with several Canadian-produced series earning multiple nods.

Leading the charge is Toronto’s Sinking Ship Entertainment, which earned 15 nominations. Dino Dana has eight nominations including Outstanding Preschool Children’s Series; Outstanding Writing for a Children’s, Preschool Children’s, Family Viewing; Outstanding Directing for a Children’s, Preschool Children’s or Family Viewing Program; Outstanding Art Direction/Set Decoration/Scenic Design; Outstanding Lighting Direction; and Outstanding Sound Editing For A Live Action Program. 

Michela Luci, who stars as Dana, and Bill Cobbs, who plays Mr. Hendrickson, are nominated for Outstanding Performer in a Children’s, Family Viewing or Special Class Program. Two other Canadians are also nominated in the same acting category – Victoria’s Kimberly Persona, as Miss Persona (YouTube), and Hannah Vandenbygaart for her role as Vera in ReBoot: The Guardian Code (Netflix). Jay Baruchel also picked up a nod for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program for his role as Hiccup in Dragons: Race to the Edge (Netflix).

Odd Squad, co-produced by Sinking Ship Entertainment and Fred Rogers Productions, in association with TVOKids and ICI Radio-Canada Tele, earned a total of seven  nominations. Odd Squad was recognized for Outstanding Children’s or Family Viewing Series; Outstanding Art Direction/Set Decoration/Scenic Design; and Outstanding Costume Design/Styling. The series and TV movie Odd Squad: World Turned Odd were both nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Children’s, Preschool Children’s, Family Viewing and Outstanding Directing for a Children’s, Preschool Children’s or Family Viewing Program.

American-Canadian co-production Daniel Tiger’s Neighbourhood, from 9 Story Media Group, and Nelvana/Sesame Street Workshop production Esme & Roy, are both nominated for Outstanding Preschool Children’s Animated Series.

Esme & Roy, which airs on HBO in the U.S. and Treehouse in Canada, was also nominated for Outstanding Interactive Media for a Daytime Program, and Outstanding Casting for an Animated Series or Special. Daniel Tiger’s Neighbourhood earned an additional nod for Outstanding Writing for a Preschool Animated Program. Devan Cohen, the Toronto-born actor who plays Daniel Tiger, also earned a nomination for Outstanding Performer in a Preschool Animated Program.

British-Canadian animated series Hilda (Mercury Filmworks, Silvergate Media), which streams on Netflix, earned four nominations in the Outstanding Children’s Animated Series, Outstanding Writing for an Animated Program, Outstanding Directing for an Animated Program, and Outstanding Main Title and Graphic Design for an Animated Program categories.

Based on the graphic novel series by British cartoonist Luke Pearson, the show follows the adventures of fearless Hilda, a blue-haired girl who, along with her deerfox Twig, travels to the city of Trolberg, where she befriends monsters.

Animated series Beat Bugs was nominated for Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Preschool Animated Program and Outstanding Sound Editing For A Preschool Animated Program. The British-Australian-Canadian animated kids series, produced for Netflix by Grace: A Storytelling Company and Vancouver-based Thunderbird Entertainment features covers of popular Beatles songs performed by contemporary artists and interwoven into the narrative.

Rusty Rivets, a Canadian CGI-animated series, produced by Toronto animation and VFX studio Arc Productions and Spin Master Entertainment for Treehouse TV and Nickelodeon, was also nominated for Outstanding Sound Mixing.

Cinematic VR series Space Explorers, developed by Montreal’s Felix & Paul Studios, earned a nod in the Outstanding Interactive Media category. A collaboration with NASA, Space Explorers Oculus Go, Oculus Rift, for Samsung Gear VR, is narrated by actress Brie Larson (Room, Captain Marvel), and gives viewers a firsthand look at space exploration.

Other Canadian nominations to mention include Alex Trebek, who is nominated for Outstanding Game Show Host for Jeopardy!
