CTV National News launching new early edition

CTV is launching a new, early edition of CTV National News, starting Monday, Nov. 13 to be hosted by veteran anchor Sandie Rinaldo.

The half-hour newscast will air weekdays at 5:30 p.m. ET/PT on CTV, CTV.caCTVNews.ca, and the CTV and CTV News apps.

The flagship edition of CTV National News, led by Chief Anchor and Senior Editor Omar Sachedina, will continue to wrap up the news of the day at 11 p.m. ET/PT. CTV National News will also provide segments on key stories and events that will air as part of the early evening CTV News local newscasts on Saturdays and Sundays. Bell Media says there is no change to the weekend editions of CTV National News with a new weekend anchor to be announced in the coming weeks.

According to Numeris data supplied by Bell Media, the late-night newscast continues to be the most-watched national newscast in the country, attracting an average of 46% more nightly viewers in the 25-54 demographic than its closest competitor.

“Canadians have put their trust in CTV National News, making it Canada’s most-watched national news program, and we look forward to complementing our #1 late-night broadcast with this new early evening edition,” said Richard Gray, VP, News, Bell Media, in a network announcement. “With leading locally-focused newscasts in markets across the country, and now two daily editions of Canada’s most comprehensive national newscast, we are continuing to strengthen our commitment to delivering Canadians even more of the stories that matter most.”

The addition of the new early evening edition puts CTV National News in line to compete with Global National, which airs daily at 5:30 p.m. CT/MT/PT & 6:30 p.m. ET/AT.

“Our new approach to CTV News weekday newscasts ensures audiences now receive comprehensive coverage of both local and national news in the early evening,” a Bell Media spokesperson told Broadcast Dialogue.

CTV stations across the country will now deliver local news coverage at 5 p.m., followed by the new early evening edition of CTV National News at 5:30 p.m., and the locally-focused editions of CTV News at Six.
