Corus radio & TV scholarships introduced under new corus.Futures brand

Corus Entertainment is launching two new scholarships to support post-secondary broadcasting students from under-represented communities, anchoring all of its student support initiatives under newly-created brand, corus.Futures.

The Susannah Therrien Radio Scholarship and the Corus Television Broadcast Scholarship are open to students entering their final year of studies in September 2022.

The Susannah Therrien Radio Scholarship is open to women pursuing studies in radio and was created and funded by the Corus Radio sales executive in recognition of her 20+ year anniversary with the company last fall.

The Corus Television Broadcast Scholarship is targeted at students who identify as racialized, Indigenous, living with a disability and/or 2SLGBTQ+ and pursuing studies in television broadcasting.

Both scholarships will support one student per year with tuition assistance (up to $5,000), starting in September. Selected students will also receive a three-month paid internship at either a Corus Radio or Global News station. Students may also have the opportunity to pursue an internship at The Morning Show or ET Canada in Toronto, as well as receive mentorship from Therrien and other Corus leaders.

“Both new scholarships support Corus’ ongoing efforts and commitment to foster a new generation of diverse voices and perspectives for both the radio and television industries,” said Cheryl Fullerton, EVP, People and Communications, in a release. “Post-secondary education and early-career support is essential as a foundational pathway for students to further help them achieve success in our industry.”

The new scholarships are in addition to Corus’ existing partnerships with several post-secondary journalism programs. In 2021, Corus launched Global News Scholars and Global News Black, Indigenous and Racialized (BIR) Scholarship (the latter in partnership with the RTDNA).

Applications are due Friday, May 6. Full program details, eligibility requirements and application instructions can be found here.
