CBC has unveiled its fall 2023 podcast and audio slate that includes the debut of new series exploring the disappearance of a gay rights activist in Syria, the children caught up in ISIS, and the unsolved murder of a Yukon high school student.
Among the series making their debut is Crime Story, hosted by veteran podcaster and investigative journalist Kathleen Goldhar, launching Oct. 16, which will dive into true crime investigations with the journalists behind the stories. Season 1 guests include Gilbert King (Bone Valley), Eric Benson (Project Unabomb), and Carole Fisher (The Girlfriends).
The eight-episode Bloodlines, launching Oct. 23, is hosted by BBC investigative reporter Poonam Taneja, who has covered ISIS for many years. The co-production with BBC Sounds sees Taneja embark on a journey to find answers around the 2018 disappearance of two-year-old Salmaan and his Canadian-born mother as his grandfather in London desperately searches for answers. Taneja looks into the thousands of children of Islamic State fighters, many with roots in Canada, the UK, and the U.S., still trapped without a way back home.
Gay Girl Gone, launching in November, is a documentary podcast hosted by journalist Samira Mohyeddin, investigating what happened to the infamous “Gay Girl in Damascus,” a blogger and out lesbian in a country where homosexuality is illegal. When her fans mobilize to track her down after a post saying she’s been abducted, a world of secret police, forbidden love, and deception on the web is uncovered.
Also joining the public broadcaster’s fall podcast slate is Let’s Make A Horror, from the team behind the Webby Award-winning Let’s Make A Sci-Fi and Let’s Make A Rom-Com. Launching Oct. 11, Let’s Make A Horror sees hosts Maddy Kelly, Mark Chavez, and Ryan Beil attempt to make audiences laugh (and scream) as they learn what it takes to make a truly frightening horror movie. The trio will perform a live episode of the podcast at the Just For Laughs Festival in Toronto on Sept. 30 and at On Air Fest in L.A., Nov. 1.
Other highlights of CBC’s fall audio offerings include an exclusive interview with Mick Jagger, airing on Q with Tom Power on Sept. 18; the Polaris Music Prize broadcast, set to air Sept. 22 on CBC Radio One and CBC Listen; and Reclaimed Presents: ʔəm̓i ce:p xʷiwəl Come Toward The Fire, celebrating Indigenous talent, to be broadcast Sept. 30 on CBC Music, CBC Listen and CBC Radio One
The new titles join ongoing CBC Podcasts Commotion with Elamin Abdelmahmoud, The Dose, daily news podcast Front Burner, and SICKBOY. Select titles are available to stream on CBC podcasts’ newly-launched YouTube page.
