Audacy acquires WideOrbit digital audio streaming tech

Audacy has announced its acquisition of an exclusive, perpetual license to WideOrbit’s digital audio streaming technology and the related assets and operations of WO Streaming.

The company says the acquisition gives Audacy “control of its product roadmap to deliver enhanced consumer-facing streaming features for its 170 million monthly listeners.”

WO Streaming is a digital revenue and audience expansion solution that helps terrestrial broadcasters monetize streaming content via direct-sold campaigns, WideOrbit’s ad sales partners, and its programmatic digital audio platform.

Audacy operated as Entercom Communications for more than five decades – the second-largest radio ownership group in the U.S. with 235 terrestrial stations – up until this past March. The company’s rebrand reflects its ongoing push into the digital space with its acquisitions of podcast creator and distributor Cadence 13, Brooklyn-based Pineapple Street Studios, podcast influencer marketplace Podcorn, and sports betting data company, BetQL. It has also retired Radio.com as the name of its direct-to-consumer streaming platform.

“The WideOrbit digital audio tech business perfectly complements our organic investments to make Audacy’s digital platform the top choice for listeners, clients and partners,” said David Field, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Audacy, in a company announcement.

Audacy will operate WO Streaming under the name AmperWave. The entire WO Streaming team, led by John Morris, SVP Streaming, has joined Audacy.
