CRTC collecting comments on Fox News ban in Canada

The CRTC has opened a Part 1 Application for the removal of Fox News from the list of non-Canadian programming services authorized for distribution.

The move comes following publication of an open letter to CRTC Chairperson Vicky Eatrides in early April from Egale Canada calling for the channel’s removal from Canadian airwaves. The LGBTQ advocacy group says the American news channel’s programming is known to incite hate, violence and discrimination, and is in clear violation of Canadian broadcasting standards.

The letter’s main target was former host Tucker Carlson, who has espoused anti-trans views. He was recently released by the network.

Egale notes that specifically, Canadian broadcasters can be fined or lose their licences for broadcasting “any abusive comment or abusive pictorial representation that, when taken in context, tends to or is likely to expose an individual or a group or class of individuals to hatred or contempt on the basis of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age or mental or physical disability.”

The group maintains the channel has no business on Canadian cable.

“The CRTC is obligated to investigate whether the continued broadcasting of Fox News on Canadian television is in line with the Television Broadcasting Regulations. People in Canada deserve to know that the news broadcast on Canadian airwaves is reliable and objective, and marginalized groups must be protected from malicious propaganda,” states the letter. “The public interest clearly demands a consultation on the appropriateness of the continued inclusion of Fox News on the List.”

The deadline for comments is June 2.
