Suzanne Guèvremont named new head of NFB, Government Film Commissioner

Suzanne Guèvremont begins a five-year term on Monday, Nov. 28 as the new Government Film Commissioner and Chairperson of the National Film Board (NFB).

She succeeds Claude Joli-Coeur, who led NFB for nearly nine years. His term concluded on Nov. 25.

Guèvremont has been the Director of Montréal’s École des arts numériques, de l’animation et du design (NADUQAC) since 1999, which offers training in the fields of 3D animation, television and film post-production, video gaming, design, simulation and visualization, including virtual reality.

Mandated by the Quebec Ministry of Higher Education, she also founded SYNTHÈSE Pôle Image Québec, an initiative dedicated to advancing digital creative expertise and research. She additionally serves as Chair of the Board for Collège Notre-Dame and with her new appointment has stepped away as Vice-Chair of the Board of the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC). She’s previously served on the boards of CBC/Radio-Canada, the Bell Fund (as a director and chair), the Association des écoles supérieures d’art de Montréal (ADESAM), the Consortium en innovation numérique du Québec, Alliance numérique, the CESAM Multimedia Consortium and the Forum des inforoutes et du multimédia.

“The National Film Board of Canada is one of our country’s leading institutions. Through the creative works it produces and distributes, the NFB affirms its role as a catalyst—a role that’s essential to the vitality and intelligence of our civil, cultural, scientific and economic society,” said Guèvremont in a statement released by NFB on Friday. “Our cultures and our Canadian values—whether expressed implicitly or explicitly—influence our thoughts and our behaviours, and form part of our collective heritage. It is with great pride, enthusiasm and humility that I undertake this mandate. The Canadian landscape is changing, the means at our disposal for creating content are constantly evolving, and so are audience behaviours. I’m very much looking forward to meeting all the teams across Canada, and to working with them in pursuit of our goals.”
