SMG to market Canadaland IP for TV & film adaptation

With Canadaland podcasts like Thunder Bay and Cool Mules already in development, the independent news outlet has struck a deal that will see California-based Storied Media Group (SMG) market its journalism to film and television producers globally.

As first reported by Variety, the deal is said to encompass packaging and sales of Canadaland IP (intellectual property), with SMG to promote its content internationally to studios, networks and streaming services.

Thunder Bay, which explored endemic Indigenous racism in the Northwestern Ontario city, is currently in production with eOne for Crave, with podcast host Ryan McMahon, Canadaland founder Jesse Brown, and Northwood Entertainment’s Miranda De Pencier executive producing.

True crime series Cool Mules, which took listeners inside the international cocaine-smuggling ring operating within VICE Media, leading to a nine-year prison sentence for former music editor Slava Pastuk, is also in development for television.

SMG was founded in 2013 by industry veteran and former literary agent Todd Hoffman, who previously headed the Media Rights Group at International Creative Management (ICM). The company has managed packaging and sales of IP for The New York Times (NYT), Washington Post, NPR and screenwriters like Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan and Nebraska writer Bob Nelson.

Among the projects produced from its sales are Netflix series Insatiable, based on a 2014 NYT article; Amazon Prime Video’s Modern Love, also based on a NYT column; and HBO big pharma opioid documentary Crime of the Century, produced in association with the Washington Post.
