MLSE and AWS launch new ‘SportsX’ R&D program

Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) Digital Labs and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have unveiled new research and development program, SportsX, focused on enhancing both the fan experience and team performance by advancing innovation around sports, entertainment and technology.

“We’re thrilled to announce SportsX, a new incubator in collaboration with AWS rooted in research, applied sciences and product development,” said Humza Teherany, Chief Technology Officer, MLSE, in an announcement. “The program is an extension of our ongoing work with AWS and combines the expertise from both of our organizations with ideas shared by our passionate fans, to create a powerhouse in sports innovation.”

SportsX aims to build out the best ideas – whether they originate from coaches, fans, partners, or employees – to be developed and tested in the MLSE environment with a goal of creating solutions that can benefit the sports industry at large. A SportsX web portal accompanied Tuesday’s launch where interested stakeholders can receive updates on idea submission openings.

Among those on the SportsX Governance Committee are Darryl Metcalf, Assistant GM, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Keith Boyarsky, VP, Basketball Strategy & Research, for the Toronto Raptors.

The launch follows a successful R&D pilot that birthed initiatives like the NHL Extended Reality Stats Overlay, an augmented reality game viewing experience that brings broadcast and video game capabilities to those watching in-person, and an Immersive Basketball Experience developed using optical data to give the user a life-sized AR experience as if they are viewing a game as a player or sitting courtside.
