Jack Nagler, CBC’s senior director of Journalistic Public Accountability and Engagement, has been appointed the public broadcaster’s new English Services ombudsperson.
Nagler has been with CBC News since 1990, and was most recently responsible for co-authoring CBC/Radio-Canada’s latest Journalistic Standards and Practices policy, as well as acting as the liaison with the Office of the Ombudsman. He’s also held senior positions in both television and radio, as managing editor of Radio News programming and executive producer of World Affairs, responsible for overseeing international news across CBC platforms.
The ombudsperson handles complaints from the public if they are not satisified with the response they receive from the news department. The position is completely independent of program staff, reporting directly to the corporation’s board of directors through the president & CEO. The public broadcaster employs two ombudsmen: one for English Services and one for French Services who can be reached through their respective websites
“Our ombudsperson helps demonstrate the importance that we place on ensuring accuracy, integrity, balance, impartiality and fairness in our journalism. Jack’s experience and deep commitment to journalistic ethics make him the perfect person to uphold our commitment to being transparent and accountable to Canadians,” Catherine Tait, President and CEO, CBC/Radio-Canada, said in a press release.
Current CBC ombudsperson Esther Enkin will stay on until her retirement at the end of December. Enkin has been in the role since Nov. 2012 after 25 years with the public broadcaster in roles ranging from executive editor of CBC News to Director of Content Development. She’s also served as a senior editor for the World at Six and field producer for The Journal, where her documentaries won several international journalism awards.
Prior to Enkin, the role was held by a series of former journalists including Kirk LaPointe, former senior vice-president of CTV News and current Glacier Media VP; former CBC Newsworld head Vince Carlin; the late David Bazay, former CBC News chief editor; and Australian Canadian news producer Bill Morgan.
