Ivan Grbovic’s ‘Drunken Birds’ to represent Canada in Oscar race

“This year, 10 films were submitted to the pan-Canadian selection committee, and Drunken Birds [Les oiseaux ivres] was chosen as the film with the best chance of being nominated for this prestigious award,” said Christa Dickenson, Executive Director and CEO, Telefilm Canada. “Telefilm will support the film’s team on this exciting journey. This vote of confidence is a phenomenal springboard for these creators and a terrific opportunity for Canada to demonstrate the excellence of its film industry.”  

Drunken Birds [Les oiseaux ivres], which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in the Platform program, will be released on Oct. 15. The film stars Jorge Antonio Guerrero, Hélène Florent, Claude Legault, Marine Johnson, Maxime Dumontier, Amaryllis Tremblay, Karl Walcott, Yoshira Escárrega, Gilberto Barraza, and Normand D’Amour, among others. The film follows a Mexican cartel henchman’s quest to find his lost love, which takes him to the Bécotte farm near Montréal.

The film is produced by micro_scope and distributed by Les Films Opale. Its international sales agent is WaZabi Films.

Grbovic studied at Concordia University and the American Film Institute. His first feature film, Romeo Eleven [Roméo Onze] (2011), won the Ecumenical Jury Prize at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival and the Discovery Award at the Namur Film Festival.

So far, 15 countries have submitted their entries for the best international film. Last year, 93 countries submitted a film.
