CBC/Radio-Canada, JAZZ.FM91 make New York Festivals Radio Awards shortlist

CBC/Radio-Canada and Toronto not-for-profit station JAZZ.FM91 (CJRT-FM) are among the global broadcasters shortlisted in the New York Festivals Radio Awards competition.

The United Kingdom leads the shortlist with 75 entries, followed by the United States with 57, Ireland with 56, and Canada with 35 entries.

Among the CBC productions shortlisted are CBC Podcasts’ Life Jolt, White Hot Hate, The Village (Season 2), and Boys Like Me. CBC Radio programs making the list include The World at Six for Best Newscast; Cross Country Checkup’s coverage of the “Freedom Convoy” for Best Coverage of a Breaking News Story; and Quirks & Quarks Black in Science Special, nominated for Best Documentary: Science & Technology.

Q with Tom Power makes the list twice, nominated for Best Entertainment Magazine and Best Interview for Power’s conversation with Adele. He’s up against The Next Chapter’s Shelagh Rogers in the latter category for her interview with author Robert Munsch.

Radio-Canada’s René Homier-Roy was shortlisted for Best Radio Personality: Network/Syndicated, while its Battle Of The Books For Young Audiences was shortlisted for Best Children/Young Adult Program, among 11 nominations for French radio.

JAZZ.FM91 received four nods, including Best Jazz Format; Best Writing for its Black History Month Vignettes; Best Music Special for Caribbean Christmas Mixtape; and Best Music Podcast for its In The Land Of The Misty Giant episode featuring Grammy-winning keyboardist Shaun Martin, in which artists are asked to talk about their favourite Oscar Peterson songs.

Honouring audio storytellers from around the globe since 1957, entries were judged online by NYF’s Radio Awards Grand Jury of 200+ producers, directors, writers, and other creative media professionals. The criteria included production values, creativity, content presentation, direction, writing, achievement of purpose and audience suitability.

Award-winning entries will be announced during the New York Festivals 2022 Storytellers Gala virtual event on April 26.
