CBC/Radio-Canada employees brace for job cuts

CBC/Radio-Canada employees are bracing for potential job cuts to be announced Monday as President & CEO Catherine Tait summons staff to a virtual meeting.

In an all-staff email from Tait and the Senior Executive Team, employees have been told they’ll be updated on the public broadcaster’s “financial challenges and will discuss what’s coming up in the next months.”

“This will also be an opportunity to ask us any questions you may have on the subject,” the memo advises. “Please note, however, that we will not be answering questions about specific teams or colleagues.”

Facing a $100 million budget shortfall, sources to Le Journal de Québec suggest 600 to 700 employees across the country could fall to cutbacks, as many as 300 positions in Quebec alone. The public broadcaster had already enacted a freeze on new hires in October.

In its latest quarterly report, CBC/Radio-Canada revenue decreased by 5.4% primarily due to a softer TV advertising market and lower income from content sales.

CBC/Radio-Canada has approximately 7,900 full-time equivalent employees, more than 80% of which are unionized.
