Cardinal, The Handmaid’s Tale, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina lead DGC Award wins

The Directors Guild of Canada (DGC) handed out its 18th annual DGC Awards Saturday night in Toronto.

Hungarian-Canadian filmmaker George Mihalka (My Bloody Valentine, La Florida) was this year’s recipient of the DGC Lifetime Achievement Award. Carole Vivier, longtime CEO of Manitoba Film & Music and Manitoba Film Commissioner, was honoured with the DGC Honourary Life Member Award. Vivier retired in June after 26 years in the role.

While Jasmin Mozaffari’s Firecrackers went into the awards with a leading three nominations in the Feature Film category, its team came away empty-handed. Toronto director Patricia Rozema’s Mouthpiece and Robert Budreau’s Stockholm ended up tying for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film. Mouthpiece also claimed the award for Best Picture Editing for Lara Johnston.

In the Television category, CTV’s Cardinal claimed three awards including Best Production Design (Rory Cheyne), Best Picture Editing – Movies for Television and Mini-Series (Hugh Elchuk), and Best Sound Editing (David McCallum, Jane Tattersall, Barry Gilmore, Claire Dobson, Paul Germann, Christopher King) in the same category.

The Handmaid’s Tale picked up two awards for both Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Dramatic Series (Jeremy Podeswa) and Best Picture Editing (Wendy Hallam Martin). Vancouver-shot Netflix series The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and CBC family drama Northern Rescue also took home two awards apiece.
