Nextech AR Solutions has signed an agreement to acquire UK-based spatial computing company ARway in an all-stock transaction worth $1.25 million. The acquisition provides Vancouver-based Nextech with a spatial mapping platform critical to building the “Metaverse” — augmented reality layers of computer-generated text and images visible on top of reality. ARway’s tech uses AI to recognize surroundings for location mapping, providing users with an Augmented Reality Software Kit (SDK) to frame the digital world in a few minutes. Already identified by digital giants like Facebook, Apple, and Microsoft as the future of the internet, the acquisition positions Nextech as a first mover toward the “mini-metaverse” which Nextech AR CEO Evan Gappelberg says will be available to brands and companies that want to create mini-metaverses based on a geolocation like museums, corporate headquarters, sports stadiums, or university campus. As part of the transaction, Nextech plans to add ARway founders Baran Korkmaz and Nikhil Sawlani to its team.
