ATN acquires Canadian broadcast rights for Afghanistan Premier League cricket

West Indies cricket star Chris Gayle will play for Balkh Legends in the inaugural Afghanistan Premier League this month.

Asian Television Network (ATN), Canada’s largest South Asian broadcaster, has acquired exclusive Canadian broadcast rights for the first-ever Afghanistan Premier League 2018 (APL 2018).

ATN will broadcast all 23 matches of the inaugural edition of APL 2018 live on its Commonwealth Broadcasting Network (CBN) channel and ATN Cricket Plus across Canada.

A longtime broadcaster of international cricket, ATN most recently held Canadian rights for ICC Champions Trophy 2017 and ICC WorldTwenty20 (2016) and was the first to bring the World Cup of Cricket live via satellite to Canada in 1986.

“Cricket is a fast-growing sport in Canada mainly due to immigrants from Commonwealth countries and with the performance of the Afghanistan Cricket team in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2018, this sure will be a treat for all Canadians,” said Dr. Shan Chandrasekar, president and CEO, ATN.

APL 2018 will run from Oct. 5th to Oct. 21 and will feature top cricketers from around the World including Chris GayleAndre RussellShahid AfridiRashid KhanLuke RonchiBrendon McCullum,Tamim IqbalWayne Parnel, Thisara Perera and Ravi Bopara.

Five franchise teams will vie for the championship – Balkh Legends, Kabul Zwanan, Kandahar Knights, Paktia Panthers and Nangarhar Leopards. Play will take place in Sharjah, UAE with the league’s strategic objective to eventually rank as one of the top three T20 leagues in the world.
