Brand New HGTV Canada Series Uncovers the High Stakes Business of the World's Largest Handcrafted Log Home Builder
TORONTO, Dec. 5, 2013 /CNW/ - Beginning this January, HGTV Canada explores home building like never before in the brand new original series Timber Kings. Follow the grueling jobs and jaw-dropping experiences of the master log smiths at Pioneer Log Homes in Williams Lake, B.C. as they build massive, multi-million dollar log homes under tight deadlines and intense pressure. The drama begins on Timber Kings Sundays at 10pm ET/PT beginning January 5th on HGTV Canada.
"HGTV Canada is the undisputed destination for compelling stories about the home and this winter we're taking it to another level with Timber Kings," said Barb Williams, Senior Vice President, Content, Shaw Media. "This new original series expertly tells the stories of a crew that masterfully crafts the most difficult and elaborate log homes, navigating anything and everything the elements, terrain and clients can throw at them."
Crafting these magnificent homes around the world requires a labour-intensive process to ensure perfection for each elite client. The homes themselves are all made on site at Pioneer Log Homes, with each enormous log notched by hand to fit exactly into the next. The homes are then dismantled to be reassembled at their final destination, which can be a very dangerous job as the builders need to maneuver the 2,000 pound logs in often extreme weather conditions. Add using a 20-pound chainsaw three stories in the air and the stakes get even higher. This season alone the Timber Kings crew builds homes in Germany, Scotland and on a private island in England, in addition to locations across North America.
"We are proud to be joining the line-up of very popular HGTV Canada shows," said Audrey Mehler, Executive Vice President for Paperny Entertainment. "We think viewers will agree that the Timber Kings are more than builders and highly-skilled craftsmen. They are also true artists…with egos and competitive drives, of course."
The premiere episode focuses on building a 4,400 square foot lakefront cottage in Northern Ontario where the severe winter weather puts everything at risk for the Timber Kings crew. All of the materials must make it over a series of three impossibly narrow, icy bridges before they can even begin building, putting their timelines to the test. Back at the work yard in Williams Lake, an eccentric Arkansas millionaire is in the market for a massive 1,000 year old tree to become the centerpiece of his new home for a whopping cost of $80,000, and two of the Pioneer Log Homes crew push each other to breaking points in a fight for new equipment.

YTV debuts wacky animated comedy Numb Chucks on Tuesday, January 7 at 4:30 p.m. ET/PT
(December 5, 2013 – Toronto, Canada) Corus Entertainment’s YTV is premiering Numb Chucks, a hilarious new animated series about two well-intentioned, yet misguided woodchucks, on Tuesday, January 7, at 4:30 p.m. ET/PT following SpongeBob SquarePants. The 26 x half hour series stars Dilweed and Fungus, two woodchucks with big hearts who are obsessed with using their bungling kung-fu skills to protect the lives of the citizens in their town of Ding-a-Ling Springs. Click here for a sneak peek of Numb Chucks.
“We’re thrilled to add this clever slapstick comedy to our YTV lineup,” said Jocelyn Hamilton, Vice President, Programming and Original Production, Corus Kids. “The woodchucks’ half-witted dialogue and laugh-a-minute kung-fu antics will have kids howling.”
While immersed in their own daily life among a ragtag cast of characters including an arrogant sheep and an uptight moose, Dilweed and Fungus take on a never-ending quest to thwart danger with the guidance of their mentor and hero, Woodchuck Morris. The result is a lot of ridiculous misunderstandings and a mish mash of over-the-top martial arts in which the chucks end up accidentally and obliviously solving the problem at hand.
”Numb Chucks is an off-the-wall, action-packed comedy that really delivers,” said Vince Commisso, President & CEO, 9 Story Entertainment. ”We are so pleased to be partnering with YTV on this hysterical series, and can’t wait to share it with kids across the country.”
The series will be complemented by interactive, digital content, including three online games on YTV.com as well as a mobile app in development that will feature several mini games with fun kung-fu-themed challenges.

ITU WORKSHOP AFFIRMS NABA VIEW THAT BROADCASTING IS KEY COMMUNICATIONS MEDIUM IN EMERGENCIES
December 4, 2013 / TORONTO, Canada – NABA is pleased to announce that the ITU recently held a Workshop on Emergency Broadcasting in Geneva on November 21st where the importance of international cooperation to enhance the reach of broadcasting in emergency situations was highlighted and stressed. This initiative, largely due to the work of NABA and NABA-member CBS, is reflected in a NABA (April, 2013) contribution to Study Group 6 (SG-6) on The Importance of Radio and Television Broadcasting for Emergency Communications to the Public. This contribution was presented by Lynn Claudy of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) representing NABA. Mr. Claudy along with Gary Stanley (Babcock International, UK) were also both named co-Rapporteurs for this important work.
A new ITU Report on Emergency Broadcasting will be finalized by April, 2014 and made available online free of charge. A draft Report has been compiled by the co-Rapporteurs and is currently available at: www.itu.int/en/ITU-R/study-groups/rsg6/Pages/default.aspx. Also, a video is available on the ITU’s YouTube Channel that features SG-6 Chair, Christoph Dosch (IRT Germany) speaking on the vital importance of broadcasting in disasters (http://youtu.be/60l1GXZUddM). For more information, please view the dedicated webpage for the Workshop (www.itu.int/go/ITU-R/RWP6A- 2013) where the draft report can also be downloaded as well as the presentations and other information.
“Emergency broadcasting plays a critical role in the rapid dissemination of information to the public, and is a key element in helping save lives in the aftermath of natural disasters.”
- Hamadoun I. Touré, ITU Secretary General
NABA feels that evidence is overwhelming on the critical need for broadcasters to retain access to adequate RF spectrum and that terrestrial television and radio broadcasters provide the fastest and most effective provision of information to the public in critical situations. Broadcasting infrastructure provides reliable point-to-everywhere delivery of essential information and safety advice to the public, first responders, and others via widely available consumer receivers, both mobile and fixed. Terrestrial television and radio broadcast infrastructure is highly robust in the face of disasters that often damage facilities or cut power to the infrastructures of other communications technologies, including two-way voice and data services.
The North American Broadcasters Association (NABA) is an association of broadcasters in Canada,
Mexico, and the United States. The NABA Technical Committee is its standing technical body. NABA is
thus in a position to present the technical viewpoints of the most authoritative associations of
professional North American Broadcasters in television and sound program production, postproduction,
and distribution for terrestrial, satellite, and cable broadcasting.
NABA is a Sector Member of ITU-R and a long-time participant in ITU-R Study Groups, Working
Parties, Task Groups, Rapporteur Groups, etc. NABA numbers among its members Chairmen, Vice-
Chairmen, and members of the above groups. NABA also participates widely in the ITU work on radio,
television, and multimedia services.
